Trigrammic
Jonathan Miller and Philip Esselaar formed Trigrammic in 1998 as an ICT consultancy specialising in the effective use of ICT in business and in government. Jonathan Miller obtained his PhD in this area and Philip Esselaar his Masters. Initially, Trigrammic conducted effectiveness surveys for a variety of companies including Liberty Life and the Board of Executors. Jonathan also developed a computer-based business game that allows participants to learn the basic principles of business and the role of the computer in effective management
decision making. Over 100 companies have now used this product.

Over the past few years the scope of Trigrammic's activities has expanded to include consulting and collecting and analysing data related to the condition of the information and communications technology industry in several African countries and elsewhere. In the process, Trigrammic have interviewed hundreds of key stakeholders and developed an extensive network of contacts in countries such as Namibia, Rwanda, Tanzania, Swaziland, Mozambique, Zambia, Malawi and SA. The Trigrammic partners have been active in a variety of major South African projects such as the National Research and Technology Foresight Project, the SA IT Industry Strategy Study, and the eCommerce process.

World Wide Worx (Pty) Ltd
World Wide Worx is an independent research and consulting organisation with a focus on business strategy. It offers a range of services intended to provide both industry intelligence and strategic insight into the hi-tech economy.

It has entered strategic alliances with leading practitioners in specialised areas of strategy, from mobile commerce to procurement systems to wireless supply chains. All of these competencies are unified under World Wide Worx's strategic guiding principle, namely that the embrace of new technologies must ideally occur as an extension of, support for, or enhancement to existing business strategy.

While pure technology-driven strategies are also supported, they are not pursued for their own sake, but rather as vehicles for achieving wider business goals.

World Wide Worx is headed by Arthur Goldstuck, a pioneer in SA in the use of the Internet as a tool for productivity.

The organisation comprises four main areas of competency, namely:
  • Research
  • Strategy
  • Benchmarking (usability, content analysis, strategic evaluation)
  • Publishing (online magazines and email newsletters)
Africa’s Common Position for Digital Inclusion

The UN Economic Commission for Africa organised the African Development Forum ’99, which was a major conference on ICT in Africa. Among the outputs were commissioned papers on four key themes: Electronic Commerce, Youth and Education, Health and National Policies and Strategies.

Trigrammic associate, Tina James, was the coordinator for the Youth and Education paper, and Trigrammic partner Jonathan Miller carried out extensive editing and consolidation of all four papers - see www.uneca.org/aisi.

A follow up was the adoption of Africa’s Common Position for Digital Inclusion.

Tina James is currently preparing a strategy document for the ECA dealing with ICT in Africa.
Policies Related to ICT in South Africa
